Ven a Cantar

Synopsis
“Ven A Cantar” is a piece born from the strength of friendship and collaboration, values that resonate deeply with the spirit of Christmas. In October 2023, my friend José Meza, a member of The Sunday Night Singers, told me they were looking for something fresh and original, with a Latin touch, for their Christmas show on PBS SoCa. The choir’s director, Mike McCullough, contacted me, and after a brief call, they asked if I could write a three-minute piece for the show. Though I only had seven days to complete it before heading out on a world tour, I took on the challenge and used all my knowledge of popular music to create the first version, which featured percussion and piano.
However, we soon realized that the original arrangement did not give the choir the prominence it deserved. We decided to postpone the performance for a year to transform the piece into something entirely choral. Inspired by the vocal work of maestro Guido López-Gavilán in his piece “El Guayaboso,” we restructured the work, expanding it from four to eight voices. These voices not only took over the original melodic lines, but also integrated the characteristic rhythms of mambo, creating a rich and vibrant texture with no instruments other than the human voice.
This collaborative process, from the initial idea to the teamwork required for the re-composition, reflects the true value of friendship and collective effort, which are also at the heart of the Christmas season. “Ven A Cantar” is now a piece that, in addition to being musically complex, celebrates human connection and the power of collective singing, making it ideal for both Christmas festivities and choral competitions due to its rhythmic and vocal richness.
Lyrics
Come and sing, for the star will shine,
Come and sing, for Christmas has arrived,
Come and dream, for the world is real,
Love unites us, no matter where you are.
